For Tuesday of the First Ordinary Week of the Church Year

Mark 1:21-28
Hebrews 2:5-12

Twice today in the synagogue, the people remark with amazement that Jesus teaches with authority and in a new way.
The first time it is because he does not teach like the scribes, who simply quote or read aloud the teachings of classic authors from the past.
Instead, Jesus teaches in his own way, on his own authority.
The second thing the people credit to the authoritative teaching of Jesus is the obedient departure of unclean spirits after a command from Jesus.
The authoritative teaching of Jesus brings in the new, and it also stops ancient evil and throws it out.
With his teaching authority he builds up, strengthens, and renews.
With his teaching authority he also opposes evil, shuts its mouth, drives it away, and destroys it.
He is a new kind of teacher, and he is also a royal warrior.
His foes, the unclean spirits, immediately recognize that war has come to them from the Kingdom of God.
Have you come to destroy us?
... you are... the Holy One of God!

War brings bloodshed, and so does priestly sacrifice.
Royal war and priestly sacrifice come together in the mission of Jesus.
The first reading from the Word of the Lord today upholds the interweaving of the royalty, the bloodshed, the priesthood, and the sacrifice of Jesus.
We see Jesus crowned with glory and honor
because he suffered death...
that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
For it was fitting that God...
in bringing many children to glory,
should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering.
He who consecrates
and those who are being consecrated all have one origin.

By his royal war and priestly sacrifice, Jesus wins us and consecrates us to be his brethren before his heavenly Father.
He embraces us with his sacrifice and his victory.
He gives us to eat and drink his sacrifice and his victory.
Let us be steadfast and careful to join him in making war against our sins and in consecrating ourselves in doing good, lest by new sins and negligence we spit out the royal dignity we have from the Son of God.
